Metric finishing or cup washers are used to put a countersunk screw head in a cup shaped holder when the screw isn't being countersunk into the surface underneath. It provides a finished, decorative appearance. They are available in both steel and stainless as well as brass.

Before a countersunk (flat or oval head) threaded fastener is driven into a surface, a washer may be placed under the head for greater protection to prevent the fastener head and/or nut from scratching or indenting the surfaces of the fastened parts, which could ultimately loosen the fastener or damage the surface of the part.
