Wing nuts are designed to be installed and removed by hand, hence the large wings to grab with your fingers.  Wing nuts are available in steel, stainless, brass, and aluminum. There are also wing nuts made out of Zamak(R) Alloy with washer bases for specialty applications including hurricane panel and hurricane shutter installation. Most wing nuts are forged (cast out of a single piece of metal) but some sizes are also available stamped (pressed out of a sheet). Pressed wing nuts are much lighter, but also not nearly as strong.
