Precision ground dowel pins are short cylindrical rods with chamfered ends. They are a friction fastener used to assist in the accurate location or alignment of machine components. Dowel pins are made out of 4037 alloy steel and have no finish. Their shiny appearance comes from the precision grinding. These are standard, but oversized tolerances are also available for greater friction.

Not to be confused with the wood dowels used in the furniture industry, dowel pins are solid, headless, cylindrical metal pins that have been machined to exacting tolerances. Dowel pins are typically used to align, locate, or join component to absorb lateral stress. However, they can also be used as a pivot, shaft, or hinge.  They should not be confused with taper pins.
