Carriage Bolts
The go-to fastener for wood-to-wood and wood-to-metal connections, carriage bolts may be fully or only partially threaded. The square neck beneath a shallow mushroom head self-locks the bolt when it is inserted through the square hole in a metal strap. The standard carriage bolt has a round head and a square neck, but they also are available with oval necks, ribbed neck, or no neck. Some come with fins. Other have square heads. There are also short-neck carriage bolts. We can even get the special indented square head, ribbed neck, carriage bolts used in the window industry.
Also check out step bolts (carriage bolts with a wide, low profile head) and timber bolts which have fins under the head).
